Description

A comforting and nostalgic dessert made with warm, juicy apples and a soft, buttery topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • a pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or buttermilk)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Toss sliced apples with 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a little lemon juice. Let sit for 15 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and remaining sugar. Stir in melted butter and milk until just combined.
  4. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spread the apple mixture evenly in the dish.
  5. Pour the batter over the apple filling, covering the apples mostly.
  6. Bake for 35-45 minutes, until the top is golden brown and apples bubble at the edges.
  7. Allow to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Experiment with different apple varieties and serve with vanilla ice cream or crushed walnuts.
