Description

This Easy Fresh Green Bean Casserole with Crispy Topping is a modern twist on a holiday classic, made with fresh green beans, a creamy mushroom sauce, and a golden, crunchy onion-breadcrumb topping.

Ingredients

Scale

1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces

1 cup mushrooms, sliced (cremini or button)

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons butter

1 cup heavy cream

1 tablespoon soy sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (panko recommended)

1/2 cup crispy fried onions

1 tablespoon melted butter (for topping)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

2. Blanch green beans in boiling salted water for 3 minutes, then transfer to an ice bath. Drain and set aside.

3. In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until translucent.

4. Add mushrooms and garlic. Sauté until mushrooms release moisture and begin to brown, about 5-7 minutes.

5. Reduce heat. Stir in heavy cream and soy sauce. Simmer for 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

6. Combine green beans and sauce in a large mixing bowl. Toss until well coated.

7. In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs, crispy onions, and melted butter to make the topping.

8. Transfer the green bean mixture to a greased 9×13” casserole dish. Top evenly with breadcrumb mixture.

9. Bake for 25–30 minutes until topping is golden and casserole is bubbly.

10. Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use frozen green beans if fresh are unavailable—just reduce blanching time.

Add a sprinkle of Parmesan or fresh thyme before serving for added depth.

Can be made ahead and baked the next day—perfect for holidays!
