Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 4 medium russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup cream or milk
  • Fresh parsley or thyme, for garnish
  • Optional: sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add onions and garlic to the skillet. Sauté until fragrant and onions are translucent.
  4. Layer the potatoes in a greased casserole dish, followed by a layer of the beef mixture. If using mushrooms, layer those in as well.
  5. Sprinkle cheese on top of the beef layer, followed by more potatoes. Continue layering until all ingredients are used, finishing with cheese.
  6. Pour cream or milk evenly over the entire casserole, allowing it to seep through the layers.
  7. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil, and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until cheese is bubbly and golden.
  8. Let it rest for a few moments before serving to allow the casserole to set.

Notes

Feel free to add vegetables like spinach or bell peppers to boost nutrition. Use a mandolin slicer for even potato slices.
