- 1 lb ground beef or turkey
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (regular or panko)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup mushrooms, chopped
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tsp dried thyme or parsley (optional)
- 1 tbsp olive oil, for sautéing
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a skillet, heat olive oil and sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until fragrant.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground meat, sautéed onions, breadcrumbs, eggs, salt, pepper, and optional herbs.
- Fold in half of the cheese and chopped mushrooms until evenly mixed.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased casserole dish, flattening the top with a spatula.
- Top with the remaining cheese.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C) and cheese is golden.
- Let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
Notes
For a twist, consider adding spinach or bacon bits for extra flavor.
